“What’s News”?
At the AELC?

With a little assistance from our Education Director, I wrote a letter to local businesses telling them about Geocaching and asking them to sponsor a geocache for our upcoming AELC Geocache Bash on August 25th & 26th. What is a geocache you ask? A geocache is a hidden container containing “treasures”. We’ve asked businesses to put in gift certificates, items from their business, or whatever “treasure” they would like to send out to people geocaching in the Fertile Sand Hills. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve found dozens of geocache boxes, everyone gets a chance to find treasure.
Geocaching is a worldwide game played using GPS (Global Positioning System) units. The game involves a GPS user hiding a “treasure” (geocache container and its contents) and publishing the exact coordinates so that other GPS users can try to hunt to find it.
The only rule of the game is that if you take something from the cache (container), you must leave something else in its place and you must write about your visit in the logbook included. Please don’t move the container. If you wish to, go ahead and take something from the container, then leave something else for others to find. Or, if you chose not to take anything, you can leave the cache and its contents in the box. Geocache slang calls it “take nothing, leave nothing.”
Geocaching is open to anyone with a GPS system and a sense of adventure. There will be caches hidden throughout the Fertile Sand Hills for our AELC Geocache Bash. Geocaching will begin on Sunday, August 26th at noon. There are GPS units available for rent inside the Nature Center if you want to search for the caches but do not have a GPS unit of your own. We only have a limited amount of units and charge $6. So if you have your own, please bring it to give beginners a chance to check out the game of geocaching.
For businesses that still want to sponsor a box, it is not too late! We will be conducting a hide your own box on August 19th at 3:00 pm. We will meet in the Nature Center and will help businesses hide their cache in the Fertile Sand Hills. Remember to put a pen and small notebook as well as your treasure before the box is hidden. Also, if you hide your own cache, please write down the coordinates so we can find it. Thanks.
Check out the posters around town. Saturday is the Dance on the Deck with Double D Entertainment, Camping, and a bowl of chili for anyone hungry. Sunday is a day full of activities, animals, music, woodworking, LaLa Homemade Ice Cream & More. So mark your calendars!
